AMC's Mission Statement

The Appalachian Mountain Club promotes the protection, enjoyment and stewardship of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region. We believe that mountains, forests, and waters have intrinsic worth and also provide recreational opportunities, spiritual renewal, and ecological and economic health for the region. Because successful conservation depends on active engagement with the outdoors, we encourage people to experience, learn about, appreciate, and understand the natural world.

Minutes of the November 8, 2012 Annual Meeting

Bonnie England, Narragansett Chapter Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:35pm.

The meeting was begun with a series of welcoming comments to all attendees and a brief description of this year’s shorter format which replaced specific reading of all awards with large posters placed by the dining area and at the front of the main hall for attendees to review at their leisure.

Following the overview, Bonnie introduced Mike Barry, AMC Regional Director. Mike stood and thanked the Chapter for inviting him before explaining the role of the Regional Directors. Mike informed the Chapter that a significant number of the Regional Directors are long standing Club members.

Following Mike’s comments, Bonnie introduced Roger Scholl, the AMC’s Director of Volunteer Relations.

Bonnie then asked all former Chairs, of any Chapter, to stand and be recognized. Several were present and all were given a warm round of applause.

Before beginning the formal business portion of the meeting Bonnie asked the Chapter to honor a moment of silence to recognize the three members who passed away in 2012.

Olga Monez, strong supporter of the AMC

Joe Kuzneski, former Chapter Chair and Appie of the Year

Don McQuattie, Biker, Paddler, and Teacher

It was noted that several members had uploaded tributes to these members to the Chapter website and Bonnie encouraged all present to review them.

Report of the Chapter Chair

Bonnie provided a summary of the chapter awards and accomplishments. The full list is contained in the 2012 Annual Report which can be found on the Chapter website. A brief summary follows:

-The chapter is strong and well regarded in the state

-The Narragansett Chapter held over 250 activities supported by our strong chapter leader corps

-The chapter was awarded the Chafee award for its 85 years of trail work in Rhode Island

-The chapter donated over 1,900 hours of volunteer trail work in 2012

-The chapter strives to recognize its leaders and has implemented new programs such as partially subsidized training. Bonnie emphasized that additional leaders are always needed.

-The Board will also look into how to utilize technology to fulfill the AMC mission while maintaining substantive and timely communication and financial security. A key area is the printed newsletter which is a significant cost to the Chapter but is not as up to date as the website and therefore something to be considered for eventual replacement. Bonnie stressed that Membership input will be critical to finding a long-term resolution that meets the needs of the entire Member base.

-The Chapter made significant gains in Young Member recruitment and retention under the leadership of Committee Sub-Chair Scott Disnard. These gains are crucial in maintaining and growing the membership and will be supported by additional investment in areas like the Young Members Committee.

In closing, Bonnie thanked the Board, the membership, and AMC staff for all the support she was given during her time as Chapter Chair.

Minutes of the November 8, 2012 Annual Meeting (continued)

Before closing, Bonnie listed a few additional Chapter awards and accomplishments received by the Chapter and its members this year. These included the Pychowska Stewardship Award, the Chaffee award, and several Trails Advisory Committee and Special Projects Fund grants which were used for training and safety equipment. Volunteer leaders held over 250 activities, the Climbing Committee successfully hosted the 3rd annual Reel Rock tour, the Chapter was asked to join a State sponsored think tank to share ideas of how to get more people engaged with the outdoors of RI, the Young Members group hosted several wonderful and well attended events, the chapter hosted five chapter wide events, and worked with outside organizations activities (REI, Scouts, etc…) to host many additional activities. The Chapter also strove to provide training for new and current leaders. Bonnie reiterated that all the volunteers deserved (and got) a round of applause.

Report of the Chapter Treasurer

Tom Eagan, Treasurer, presented the Treasurer’s Report. Tom offered a humorous commentary that assured the attendees that the Chapter would not face the same current fiscal challenges as the country. Tom followed with a brief formal report that underscored the fact that the Chapter remains on sound financial footing.

Awards

Bonnie reminded the attendees that the names of the 2012 New, Prolific, and Retired Leaders were listed on poster boards placed around the room. She encouraged all attendees to view the names and congratulate any of the leaders who were present.

Bonnie listed and recognized the 25 year Member awards:

Walter Hennessy Lawerence Korich

Richard Lambert Anne La Pier

Philip Lieberman David Riedel

Jen Riedel Peter Stevens

Frances Trafton Peter Trafton

None of the 25 year pin recipients were present at the meeting.

John Clarke: given to the member who makes a big mark in a quiet way. This year there were two recipients.

To present the first award, Bonnie called Brian Phillips and Sarah Rich to the podium. Brian told the group that Sarah originally came to our chapter from CA and since then has become an indispensable part of the committee. Sarah frequently organizes social activities and coordinated the highly successful Reel Rock tour, a climbing film festival with worldwide recognition. The event has grown significantly in the past few years and Sarah led the effort to move the event to the RISD auditorium where it attracted over 200 attendees. Sarah, a 2nd grade school teacher, was cited as a Member who continually steps up to take on the

unglamorous tasks that make the Committee’s events successful. Sarah was then forced to endure the personally mortifying experience of posing for a photograph in front of the membership which she did quite stoically.

The second John Clarke Award was presented by Debbie Mitchell and Tom Eagan. Debbie announced that the award was being given to Robin Kuznitz for her work leading the Membership Committee and its associated events. Tom accepted the award on Robin’s behalf. Debbie informed the Chapter that Robin took over membership 4 years ago and has done an amazing job managing the membership, recruiting, and new member events. Robin received a hearty round of applause in absentia.

Appie of the Year (the Chapter’s highest honor)

This award is given to the member who embodies the spirit of the Chapter and Club. All former recipients present were asked to stand and received a round of applause. Ed Poyer was called forward to present this year’s Appie of the Year award. Ed began his comments by stating that it was his favorite time of the year because he gets to talk positively about someone he genuinely likes and respects. He announced the 2012 recipient to be Mike Krabach. Mike received a resounding round of applause and multiple murmurs of approval. Ed stated that Mike has been working by himself on the website for the past 4 years and has does a fantastic job of both staying ahead of technology, testing new features for Club Headquarters, and remaining responsive to a wide variety of connections and constituents. In addition to his efforts as Webmaster, Mike also serves as Sea Kayaking Committee sub-chair, leads several annual trips, and holds weekly kayak rescue practice during the summer. Mike has also led bike trips and the extremely popular bike maintenance clinic with recently deceased member Don McQuattie. Mike was then presented with a plaque and received a thunderous round of applause.

Bonnie noted that Mike’s name would be added to the large plaque with all award winners on display for all to view the current and past winners.

With the presentation of the final award the Business portion of the meeting was concluded and Bonnie asked for a Motion to adjourn the meeting.

A Motion to Adjourn was made by Tom Eagan

The Motion was seconded by Jean Marie Josephson.

All voting members were in favor and the meeting concluded at 7:10

Respectfully submitted

Matt Putnam, Secretary

2013 Chapter Chair Report

It has been an honor to serve as Chair of the Narragansett Chapter of the AMC for the past year. I would like to take this time to thank the members of the executive committee for helping to make my transition easier. Although we are one of the smallest of the 12 chapters in the club, we have an amazing group of dedicated volunteers. This is evident by looking at the number of wonderful activities and events that are being held each year, and also the awards that are being received by the Members of our Chapter.

Throughout the year, a number of topics have been discussed at executive committee meetings. Three of the topics which came up repeatedly this year were:

The topic of leader appreciation is a common one for the Chapter. We have such a dedicated, hardworking group of volunteers and volunteer leaders that it has been an important topic of discussion over the years. We are very open to input from members on ideas for leader appreciation. The Chapter will shortly be providing active leaders with AMC blaze orange technical shirts distinguishing them as volunteer leaders, and the Club will be providing leader patches. We are also looking into additional ways of thanking volunteers through discounts on AMC and Chapter events, along with low or no cost training opportunities. It is always great to hear from members and participants about leaders that are doing a great job. Please let us know of any experiences that are newsworthy and we would be happy to acknowledge the leaders.

The topic of the Gansett Gazette has also been a popular topic over the past couple of years. After much discussion, and the use of surveys, it has been decided that the mailed Gazette newsletter will be discontinued, with the last mailed issue going out for the December 2013 – January 2014 issue. The online gazette is more up to date than the paper issue, at any given time the online version shows new events as well as cancelled or rescheduled events that may not be reflected in the paper gazette for a month or so. We realize that there are some members who rely on the paper gazette, and do not have the ability to access the online gazette. We do want to accommodate these members, and ask that you contact us and we will be happy to mail printed copies to you.

Over the past few years the subject of diversity and reaching out to more groups such as families and young members has been discussed. We are very impressed with the progress that the young member group has made under the leadership of Scott Disnard. Although the young member group technically does have an age limit for “young”, we are told that this group is for the young at heart and is a very diverse group. The successful trip to the “Flags on the 48” in September had members ranging in age from 11 to 71 years old. We thank the young member group for reaching out to these members. We are also happy to report that John Ferreira from our Chapter has completed youth opportunity program training and is looking forward to offering youth programs in the near future.

We currently have some openings available on the executive committee. If you think this is something you may be interested in, please contact us for more information. It is a very rewarding experience that allows you the opportunity to interact with other committee members, and have input on Chapter decisions. We meet once a month, currently the 2nd Thursday of the month, from 6 to 7:30 pm. There is an immediate opening for Chapter Secretary, we would like to thank Matt Putnam for his dedication as Secretary for the past two years. Our Chapter Treasurer, and Membership Chair, both of whom have been in their positions for several years are continuing on for the time being but are looking for some new faces with different ideas to come onboard soon. There are also openings for sub-chair positions for skiing, thank you to Sue Rollins our past ski sub-chair, and for the family group and archivist. In the tech climbing group, Peter Barlow will be looking for a co-sub-chair as Brian Phillips will be stepping down after many years, thank you Peter.

In closing, thank you to members of the Executive Committee, Committee Leaders, volunteers and members for all you do for the AMC.

2013 Chapter Leadership and Member Accomplishments

These accomplishments are amazing, for our “small” chapter.

Membership Committee Report 2013

This past spring, a wonderful group of people attended our annual Spring Fling and Social, which is open to all current and prospective new members. It took place in Warwick, RI at The Carousel in Goddard Park. Many activities such as local hikes, flatwater paddling, sea kayaking and bike rides were available to all participants.

This year, we are very pleased to announce that the following chapter members will receive their 50 and 25 year membership pins:

50 Year Member

George Slinn

25 Year Members

CONSERVATION COMMITTEE REPORT 2013

This year, the Conservation Committee held seven counted events and one was cancelled. We actually did several more, but the committee chair neglected to put the word “conservation” in the write up to identify them as conservation activities. Therefore, they will not be counted as such. We had a great year as all the activities were well enjoyed.

In November 2012 at the start of our AMC year, we enjoyed a brand new and very scenic hike on Barn Island in CT and learned the story of Venture Smith, a slave who became a wealthy real estate mogul when it was illegal for slaves to own land. We look for ideas for hikes with a story to tell, especially if the land is conserved. Colleen Quattromani, a new leader offered the idea and we were extremely pleased to be able to offer the hike and history lesson by friends of Venture who researched his life and the land. We are always on the lookout for ideas like this and request you contact me with your ideas.

One of the most interesting and informative activities we ran this year was the Dragonflies and Damsel flies presentation and paddle at the Wood Pawcatuck Watershed Association. Ginger Brown, known as the Dragonfly Lady with the US Natural History Survey is booked years ahead and it took us two years to get her on our schedule. Dragonflies and damsel flies are the canaries in the coal mine where watersheds are concerned. If you see them in your watershed you are lucky. There are hundreds of kinds of dragonflies and damsel flies and may you be lucky enough to see a Halloween dragonfly someday. They are orange and many others are colors other than the black and shimmery blue we tend to see.

Once again we joined the Ten Mile River Watershed Association for the annual Roger Williams paddle. After the paddle we enjoy a gastronomically delightful feast of seafood and other foods the colonials enjoyed. This paddle includes a presentation by National Park Service Ranger John McNiff, after the Roger Williams paddle. Each year, John provides a different perspective on history and culture of the time. The paddle re-traces Williams’ escape from Massachusetts to Rhode Island (which is now East Providence). He landed in Rhode Island in the approximate location of the Roger Williams Memorial in Providence.

We continue our annual Big River paddle where we explain the history of the property and how it would be under water and would be another reservoir without people fighting to keep the river and the surrounding trails useable and accessible to the public.

We look for opportunities to do activities not usually associated with conservation such as our annual bike trip to Block Island that includes lunch and a hike at Rodman Hollow. Many options like this can be organized to include more than one activity and we hope you’ll suggest some.

This year, hurricane Sandy offered us a unique opportunity to see before and after photos presented by a coastal geologist who studied the storms. We were able to walk on the beach and in areas not yet open to the public to view and learn more about the factors involved in the devastation at Misquamicut beach.

This year was the conservation group’s first hike on Maxell Mays property which is Audubon’s newest public refuge. We had the Audubon Society of RI‘s Director of Conservation lead us and inform us on the history of the property and show off the new trail that was designed and constructed with the help of our AMC trail crew.

The Stewardship Award is given to the following members for 12 or more hours of Conservation:

Linda Pease

Jack Schempp

Dennis McCarthy

Please contact me with suggestions for conservation activities. We have a very diverse group of conservation leaders who span the gamut of all activities. We hope you’ll consider joining. The requirement to be a committee member is to run or co-lead at least one activity a year.

Please join me in thanking our leaders for their effort to offer such a wide variety of places to enjoy.

Linda Pease

Conservation Committee Chair

Trails Committee Report 2013

On behalf of the AMC Trails Committee, thank you to the 140 volunteers who contributed a total of 1,922 hours of trail work and administrative duties, from November 2012 through September 2013. There were 5 volunteers who contributed more than 100 hours each:

Ski Committee Report 2013

A Ski Committee planning meeting was held in October. Four weekend trips were scheduled this past season. Three of the four trips were successfully attended, and one was cancelled due to poor ski weather conditions and lack of response by participants. Leaders who volunteered and planned weekend trips were Chris Shafer, Jack Schempp, and Susan and Larry Rollins.

A day trip to Windblown was scheduled in February to be led by Linda Pease and Chris Turgeon.

Susan Rollins

Skiing Sub-Chair

Biking Committee Report 2013

This year we scheduled just over 30 weekend and mid-week rides. Unfortunately due to wet weather several had to be cancelled.

The traditional rides, Clam Cake, Pasta Challenge rides, the Watch Hill ride, the Block Island ride, remain very popular and many participants comment they look forward to them each year..

Two of our favorite leaders Sid Wax and Nancy Baker led or co-led over 8 rides combined. Their love of cycling and their enthusiasm is to be applauded. Nancy Baker leads her rides through new and scenic areas most people haven’t seen before. She’s an experienced well liked consistent leader. Carol Richards led a couple of mid-week rides. Ted Bell got his feet wet in leading and also went to new areas for his rides. Regulars, Herrick Spencer, Mike Krabach and I also led a ride or two. The Young Members Sub-chair, Scott Disnard, qualified as a bike leader and hopefully will bring more YM’s into the cycling world. Linda Pease and Bill Rush’s Pasta Challenges offer a mid-week break for exercise and dinner and Dennis McCarthy stepped forward and led a very popular Block Island ride/hike in September.

I commend EVERY bike leader and co-leader for their commitment to our chapter. Unfortunately, this year one of our most prolific leaders (Dick Schaffner) decided to take a well-deserved year off leading but still remained a staunch supporter of AMC. Hopefully he’ll give leading another go in the years to come.

I look forward to working with our many bike leaders again and hopefully inspire new leaders for the 2014 riding season.

Marcie Madsen

Biking Sub-Chair

Climbing Sub-Committee Report 2013

The Climbing Sub-Committee had another very active and successful year. The climbing courses had a good enrollment this year with 12 students in the Beginner course and 15 in the Intermediate course. Many of the Intermediate students went on to climb with the group during the trips and we picked up a number of new members from local climbers and the local colleges. Two of our trips exceeded 25 registrants. On a space available basis we had trip participants from other chapters including the Connecticut, Boston, and New Hampshire Chapters. We held social events, classes, or trips in every month except December and March. Thanks to the ongoing support and efforts of this year’s trip leaders and co-leaders.

We are hosting the Reel Rock Film Tour for the fourth year on November 1st at the Rhode Island School of Design auditorium. In the past years REI co-sponsored it with us and paid for the cost of the film and the Climbing Sub-Committee funded the cost of the auditorium. This year the Climbing Sub-Committee is funding the entire event as REI was not able to provide funding.

Brian Phillips and Peter Barlow

Technical Climbing Co-Sub-chairs

YOUNG MEMBERS REPORT 2013

The YM Facebook group has grown from 130 to 214 this year! This is our primary way of advertising our events are reaching out to new or prospective members.

This has been the best year yet for YM, we hosted Northern hikes, including a lake of the clouds overnight, a full Grafton loop backpack, and a weekend of backpacking in the Pemigewasset Wilderness, and overnight in the northern Presidentials. Our 4th annual Spring Camping weekend was a big success and we are looking forward to hosting it again. Many thanks for the support from the board, and the other committees for their help supporting leaders for YM. YM also hosted a mountain bike ride and a few road rides also. This will be our 2nd year in a row supporting the Flags on the 48 event as well. We've made strong ties with other chapters YM groups and many multi-chapter events are planned. I currently lead Local hikes, cycling, and northern hikes. Corey Mott is now leading Local hikes and paddling events, and we hope to develop more leaders.

Scott Disnard

Young Members Committee Sub-Chair

Backpacking & Northern Hikes Report 2013

We’ve enjoyed another excellent and safe year of hiking and backpacking. This year our group sponsored 40 activities run by 23 leaders and co-leaders. Our leaders provided activities ranging from the popular day hikes in the Holyoke range to winter trips above tree line in the White Mountains. Hikes were offered in Massachusetts Vermont and New Hampshire.

In addition to day hikes, we offered backpack trips in New Hampshire. We enjoyed a double overnighter to the Lakes of the Clouds Hut, where we enjoyed the Alpine Flowers and the hearty food.

All of our leaders continue with their Wilderness First Aid / CPR training and some have maintained their Wilderness First Responder certification. Four of our leaders are instructors at AMC’s Mountain Leadership School; one continues for the third year as the School Director. Two leaders completed Mountain Leadership School:

Some of our leaders offer club-wide events, and one of our leaders led hikes at “August Camp” again this year. Our leaders also serve as resources to the Leadership Development Committee for workshops and trips.

The committee again offered workshops in map & compass and winter mountain safety, which were well attended and very well received.

Our Step by Step hiking series, which trains new hikers to mountain hiking skills and conditions, continued to attract much interest, thanks to the commitment of our leaders.

Thank you to our northern hikes leaders and co-leaders who offered us so many fun, challenging, well run and reasonably priced activities this year.

Ed Poyer

Backpack & Northern Hiking Committee Sub-Chair

Local Hikes Report 2013

Local hiking has become very multi-dimensional in 2013. It still includes our traditional weekend hikes and, more recently, increasing number of weekday hikes led by retired baby boomers. We also have a very active and highly successful Wednesday night walks/dinner schedule organized by Sid Wax, with large turnouts reported. Our young member group, led by Scott Disnard, also has some local hikes, sometimes longer and faster paced to meet their needs. There are also some family hikes geared to parents and their children and organized by our family hiking committee. Our conservation committee schedules some local hikes, having a conservation theme included. For those having pets, we have frequent, well-attended hikes for people to bring their dogs to, organized by Bonnie England and a number of other leaders in the dog hiking committee.

Our hiking territory includes Rhode Island and adjoining states with a full range of hikes offered, relative to distance, pace, and degree of difficulty; we have something to offer for any type of hiker, to come out and join us!

We also welcome those who would be interested to become local hike leaders and we especially have a current need for some additional weekend hike leaders. Please contact our new local hiking co-chairs, Mary Ann Topp and Christine Galvin, who took these roles in the spring of 2013 or contact me, for any questions and details concerning local hike leading opportunities.

FAMILY OUTING COMMITTEE REPORT 2013

The Family Outing Committee offered a variety hikes during the past year, including the well attended hike to Rome Point for seal viewing, and the popular hike at Diamond Hill with RI Families in Nature.

Our thanks and appreciation goes out to the following leaders for including families in their activities during the past year:

- Debbie Mitchell

- Linda Pease

- Dick Sullivan

- Kathy Raposa

We also would like to thank the following groups for partnering with us on activities..

- RI Families in Nature

- Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy

Leadership Development Committee Report 2013

During 2013 our Committee continued to support the activities committees’ leader development. We worked with other committee chairs and sub-chairs, and are substantially helped by the general membership.

The annual Wilderness First Aid Workshop was held once again in April at Camp Hoffman, and was attending by 28 students, of which 12 were chapter leaders. There was also an optional CPR class Saturday evening. This course was coordinated by former Leadership Development Chair Charlie Killam with steadfast help from registrar Linda Pease.

In May, the committee ran the annual Map and Compass Workshop and Field Practice, instructed by Ed Poyer, Bob Janus, Tammy Daugherty and Denise Poyer.

In June, we ran a one day Chapter Leadership Training Workshop, which was attended by 32 or our leaders, and which was very well received.

In August, we sponsored one student to the AMC’s Mountain Leadership School. One of our leaders attended, but generously declined our offer of a scholarship. The four day August school uses a day hiking, rather than a backpacking, format.

Leadership Development Committee Chair

FlatWater Paddle Report 2013

The flat water paddling committee ran 16 paddles which included three over the Labor Day weekend at Camp Winaukee in New Hampshire.

We reprised many of our annual paddles and continued with a few newer ones which are the Locustville Pond Paddle and the Great Swamp paddle. The Great Swamp paddle has been done before, but no one can remember when! We added the Point Judith Pond paddle which has been a sea kayak jaunt, but is really fine for either. Our newly annual Save the Bay paddle which is also a cross-over paddle for flat water or sea kayakers was run again this year. We hope to continue adding more flat water paddles and build on our combo paddles that appeal to both flat water and sea kayakers.

Three of our paddles also qualified as conservation paddles as the Big River, Ten Mile River, Dragonfly and Roger Williams paddles all incorporated education or enlightenment related to science and/or the environment.

I give a big thanks to our leaders for their work in offering a wide variety of places to enjoy paddling.

I give a big thanks to our leaders for their work in offering a wide variety of places to enjoy paddling.

SEA kayAKING Paddle Report 2013

This year we offered a total of 11 sea kayaking trips, of which three of them were during the Lake Winnipesaukee Labor Day weekend. Our most attended paddle was the Barn Island paddle with 17 kayakers. The Squam Lake island camping weekend had good weather for two days of kayaking.

Additionally, we had 3 combination paddles with the Flatwater kayakers; Ninigret Pond, Passeonquis Cove, and the Black Tie paddle. We offered 5 rescue practice sessions this summer which were only partially attended.
